Award-winning dancer and choreographer Gary Clarke has built a national reputation for creating compelling dance works that challenge current social issues with both irony and humour. Bringing together an eclectic mix of fashion, visual art and popular culture, Gary has developed a unique movement vocabulary which is instantly recognisable.
A graduate from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Gary has recieved both critical and audience acclaim for his ground-breaking work (including Horsemeat and COAL), which has toured extensively both nationally and internationally. His work to date has been featured in a number of prestigious festivals including British Dance Edition, Spring Loaded 08, Junge Hunde and Homotopia – Liverpool’s annual gay / lesbian arts festival.
Since 2006 Gary has collaborated with a number of other artists in the creation of his work including renowned choreographers Javier De Frutos, Nigel Charnock and Wendy Houstoun, anarchic avant-garde performer The Divine David, experimental ‘noise’ composer Daniel Thomas and London Fashion Week Star Nasir Mazhar. He has developed a wealth of choreographic experience in creating site-specific works (in pubs, clubs, graveyards and galleries), as well as creating full-length productions for stage.
As a performer, Gary has worked with some of the most innovative dance companies in the UK and Europe including Lea Anderson’s The Cholmondeleys & The Featherstonehaughs, Adventures in Motion Pictures, balletLORENT, Bock & Vincenzi, Retina Dance Company, Phoenix Dance Theatre and The Felix Ruckert Company.
Gary is currently developing his work as an Associate Artist at Yorkshire Dance under the LIFT programme and is also closley affliliated to Danceworks UK in Sheffield.
