The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations. It builds engagement and trust for the UK through the exchange of knowledge and ideas between people worldwide.
Its arts team works with the best of British creative talent and a wide range of overseas partners to develop innovative, high-quality events and collaborations that link thousands of artists and cultural institutions around the world, drawing them into a closer relationship with the UK.
The British Council supports arts work that contributes to the development of cultural relations between the UK and the rest of the world. Grouped under three broad programme strands – Intercultural Dialogue; UK Creative & Knowledge Economy and Climate Change – its activities are designed to:
- Demonstrate British creativity, break new markets and develop new audiences e.g. through BC-initiated dance showcases such as UKMOVES (mounted recently in Roubaix) and its partnership with BDE
- Create dialogues with other communities e.g. through international residencies led by established and up-and-coming UK choreographers; the partnership with Big Dance 2010 as part of its Connecting Classrooms programme; its involvement in the S.P.A.C.E project – an initiative enabling arts managers, programmers and journalists working in the performing arts sector to develop their skills and increase their mobility across Europe
- Demystifiying issues and promoting behavioural change related to climate security e.g. collaborating with international analogues to develop practical infrastructures that will allow artists to make and tour their work in more sustainable ways; commissioning research to help establish the UK performing arts sector’s carbon footprint and its effect on the environment
