The dances of award winning choreographer Russell Maliphant are characterised by his distinctive approach to the relationship between movement, light and music.
This special programme opens with Two x Two, Maliphant’s reworking of his solo Two, which premiered at the London Colisuem in 2009 featuring Dana Fouras.
The second piece is Choice, Maliphant’s 2003 ballet for five dancers revived for the first time on Catalonia based CobosMika Company. Founded by former Maliphant company members Olgs Cobos and Peter Mika, CobosMika makes its BDE debut in this work enveloped within a sound scape influenced by Asian rhythms and written by the composer mukul.
Closing the programme is Maliphant’s brand new work, AfterLight Part 1, created for the Sadler’s Wells Production In the Spirit of Diaghilev and premiered in London in October 2009.
“A miniature masterpiece” Daily Telegraph
Using Vaslav Nijinksy’s geometric drawings and paintings as a starting point, this brand new solo features Daniel Proietto, with lighting and sound design by regular Maliphant collaborators Michael Hulls and Andy Cowton. The work has been developed in collaboration with designer Es Devlin and animation company onedotzero industries.
Please note: this production replaces In The Spirit of Diaghilev.
In the Spirit of Diaghilev consists of four separate works, with considerable technical requirements, the full extent of which has only emerged fairly recently given the newness of the production. BDE has been working to establish whether it was possible to stage the production in a way which was acceptable to all parties concerned in the context of limited technical time. This has not proven possible and, as such, we have taken the difficult decision to remove the show from the programme.
