Let's talk

14th October 2009

A new initiative at this BDE has been to begin debating way before February 2010. This has really enabled us to get to grip with some issues facing the sector ahead of the showcase and hopefully you’ll be able to experience some of the results in the performances themselves.

This is certainly true of work for children and families. The first Work for Children and Families debate back in May was seeking to define a route for development for this sub sector of the dance industry and built on the previous Children Will Listen debate hosted by Dance Umbrella and Dance UK in October 2008. This work has resulted in the strand of work for children and families that you will see at BDE this year.

This Edition opens with British Initiatives in Dance, celebrating the range of work happening across the dance field making an impact on people’s lives, well being and cultural engagement. This includes two performance pieces that reflect the high quality of youth and community practise happening in Britain today.

Running through our programme, from Thursday to Sunday morning, are three debates that promise to be a bit of BDE highlight, as the artists face the critics! The Morning After debates are an investigation of the previous day’s performance work, led by John Ashford (Director of Aerowaves). They’re a chance to hear from the artists about their performance work and contextualise why they made what they did. A panel discussion will also form part of these debates, with some of the world’s foremost promoters focusing on their response to the work they have seen.

This BDE also focuses on the digital arena in Multi Platform Dance asking what opportunities and challenges does dance face in the digital arena? This debate/event looks at stage work and its representation on the web, as well as the marketing potential of this ever evolving industry.

So, with all this debate and discussion, there’s no excuse NOT to talk at this year’s BDE!
